Riots in Mexico after the arrest of “El Chapo” baron’s son – Plane hit by gunfire

One airplane which was to depart from Culiacan, Sinaloa State on Mexico, was hit by gunfire this morning, however – fortunately – no passengers, nor airport workers were hurt in the slightest.

Videos posted on social media showed gunfire at Culiacan airport, which was later closed, amid unrest in the city.

Sources told Reuters that earlier Ovid Guzmán was arrested in this cityson of jailed drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The news of Ovid’s arrest was released after a night of riots in the city of Culiacan, in the Sinaloa State of northern Mexico, where the cartel of the same name is based, one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world.

Ovidio Guzmán, who assumed a leadership position in the Sinaloa Cartel after his father was arrested, was briefly detained in October 2019 but quickly released to avoid cartel reprisals.

His arrest comes just days before next week’s Mexico-US-Canada summit in Mexico City, where security issues are also expected to be discussed. A Mexican official said the arrest would prove a welcome addition to security cooperation between Washington and Mexico ahead of a visit by US President Joe Biden.

The US offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Ovid’s arrest and conviction.

Ovidio’s father, 65-year-old Joaquin Guzman, was sentenced in 2019 by a New York court to life in prison for drug trafficking worth billions of dollars and for conspiring to kill his enemies. He is serving his sentence at Colorado’s maximum security Supermax prison.
