Two new contracts for the construction of Waste Treatment Plants (WAS) in Chios and Kefalonia were signed this week, in the presence of the Secretary General of Waste Management Coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, Manolis Grafakos.
The contract for Chios was signed on Tuesday 17 May 2022 and the contract for Kefalonia on Thursday 19 May 2022. During the signing of the contracts Mr. Grafakos presented the progress of the projects for the creation of waste management infrastructure, which has been implemented on last three years. He stressed that to date a total of 26 waste management infrastructures have been auctioned, compared to 2019 where there was no unit in the tender process. The Secretary General of Waste Management Coordination, underlined that today in Greece there are 6 MEAs, out of 3 that operated in the summer of 2019.
With the signing of the two new contracts for Chios and Kefalonia, the units built in the country now amount to 12, compared to the summer of 2019 which was only 5.
In the next quarter, another 5 contracts are expected to be signed for the creation of Waste Treatment Units, while another 12 units are in the tender process.
