RIS: The de-ligation plan does not change – We have not submitted any request for an extension to the Commission

Regarding the reports according to which the European Commission allegedly approved the final withdrawal of lignite plants in 2028 instead of 2024, the Ministry of Environment and Energy clarifies, in its announcement, the following:

No such request has ever been sent by the Ministry of Environment and Energy to the European Commission.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy did not receive information on Thursday afternoon from a Greek official in Brussels, according to the reports, on an issue which of course has not been requested.

The decision of the Prime Minister and the government to detoxify the country from polluting fuels and lignite does not change. The withdrawal of PPC lignite plants is required not only for environmental but also for economic reasons. The company had a loss of 400 million euros in 2020 and 200 million euros in 2021 from the use of lignite plants.

The goal of the Government’s energy policy is to make our country energy competitive, utilizing the sun and the rich wind potential it has.

There is no change in the plan to withdraw the lignite units, as this has already been presented since December 2019 and is being implemented normally. Specifically, the program for the withdrawal of PPC lignite units is the following:

o 2021: Heart 3-4 (retired).

o 2022: Megalopolis 3, Agios Dimitrios 1-4.

o 2023: Agios Dimitrios 5, Meliti 1, Megalopolis 4.

o 2025: Ptolemaida 5 (conversion to a natural gas unit).
