Rishi Sunak is sworn in as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Tuesday (25). Sunak will be the third prime minister in less than two months, and admits he has a big challenge to get the British economy back on track.
Before being officially made prime minister, Sunak is expected to meet with British monarch Charles III on Tuesday. He will be the first prime minister appointed by the new king after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September.
THE CNN learned that the King was traveling to London from Sandringham’s private royal estate on Monday afternoon, as planned. He will have an audience with Truss on Tuesday morning before he meets with Sunak.
“It is the greatest privilege of my life to serve the Conservative Party and give back to the country I owe so much to,” Sunak said.
“The UK is a great country, but there is no doubt that we face a profound economic challenge. We need stability and unity and I will make it my priority to unite our country and our party, because that is the only way to overcome the challenges we face and build a more prosperous future for our children and grandchildren,” he added.
The international analyst CNN Lourival Sant’Anna describes the new management as a challenge compounded by the government of Liz Truss, which damaged the UK’s credibility and the market began to doubt the country’s ability to finance spending.
“She wanted to fulfill her promise to cut taxes and at the same time increase spending, something that Sunak had warned in debates, before Truss took over, that it was a fairy tale what she was promising,” commented Lourival.
With a more cautious profile, Rushi Sunak even promised earlier that he would reduce the income tax from 19% to 15% by 2029. While Liz Truss, his opponent in the race for the position, wanted to cut taxes immediately.
Who is Rishi Sunak, the next UK Prime Minister
Just seven weeks ago, it looked like it might all be over for Rishi Sunak.
The former chancellor made a high-risk bet and lost. He launched an attack that helped end Boris Johnson’s lead, introduced himself as his replacement, but ended up taking second place behind Liz Truss. Admitting defeat, he withdrew to the parliamentary benches.
But in a sign of how unpredictable British politics have become, Sunak now wins the lead to replace Truss, who resigned last week.
He becomes the first person of color to lead the UK – and at 42, also the youngest person to take the job in over 200 years.
Sunak, whose parents came to the UK from East Africa in the 1960s, is of Indian descent. His father was a local doctor, while his mother ran a pharmacy in the south of England, something Sunak says gave him his desire to serve the public.
He has experience in tackling the economic crisis, having guided the UK through the Covid-19 pandemic and positioned himself as the candidate for “sound finance”.
But Sunak faced criticism for being elitist, having studied at exclusive Winchester College, Oxford and Stanford. He is known for his expensive taste in fashion and has worked for banks and hedge funds, including Goldman Sachs.
Sunak was also scrutinized about the tax arrangements of his wife Akshata Murty, the daughter of an Indian billionaire.
Earlier this year, Sunak and Murty appeared on the Sunday Times rich list of the 250 richest people in the UK. The newspaper estimated their combined net worth at £730 million ($826 million).
