Rising pandemic in Nanjing, China – “Connected with a flight from Russia”

THE Nanjing city in eastern China announces 13 new COVID-19 domestic transmission cases for July 29, bringing their total to 184 from July 20, as the latest major outbreak in the country caused by the most contagious Delta strain persists.

The results of gene sequencing in 52 outbreak-related cases showed that all were infected with the Delta strain, Ding Jie, deputy director of the city’s disease control and prevention center, told a news conference today.

The first phase of the outbreak involved workers at Nanjing Lukou International Airport, who were cleaning up an aircraft that had arrived from Russia, Ding said. According to him, the sequencing of the virus gene in samples from employees was the same as that of an infected passenger from the flight.

“Once they have completed their work, and as the cleaning and protection measures did not meet the specifications, it is possible that some staff members became infected, causing the virus to spread among the cleaning staff,” Ding said.

China reported 64 cases of COVID-19 on the mainland on July 29, compared with 49 cases a day earlier, according to health officials.

As of July 29, mainland China had a total of 92,875 confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to Chinese authorities, while the death toll from the coronavirus remained unchanged at 4,636.
