Risk of hypothermia: drop in temperature in RS worries rescue teams

The Southern Military Command (CMS) reported that the weather forecast is for a window of good weather in most of the state between this Sunday (5) and next Tuesday (7), which is considered “good news” .

According to military personnel at a press conference in Porto Alegre, there should be rain this Monday, the 6th, in the extreme south of Rio Grande do Sul.

What worries the CMS, however, is the forecast of a drop in temperature in the State on Wednesday (8), which could worsen situations of hypothermia among people in need of rescue.

According to authorities, attention is mainly focused on rescue and food distribution.

“Our focus now becomes the distribution of food and donations,” said the military commander of the South, General Hertz Pires do Nascimento, appointed representative of the Ministry of Defense in the state.

According to the mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastião Melo (MDB), 70% of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul is without water. The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), classified the situation as a “war scenario”.

The press conference took place with the presence of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, government ministers and representatives of Congress and the Judiciary.

Six dams remain in emergency situation

O Rio Grande do Sul has six dams in emergency situation that is, with a risk of rupture and response actions underway, according to information from the state government. The data is from this Sunday (5).

The emergency level was registered in the following structures: São Miguel Dam, in Bento Gonçalves; SDR Dam, in Eldorado do Sul; Saturnino de Brito Dam, in São Martinho da Serra; Arroio Barracão Dam, in Bento Gonçalves; UHE 14 de Julho, in Cotiporã and Bento Gonçalves; PPCH Salto Forqueta, in São José do Herval/Putinga.

The government monitors the situation of the structures through the Secretariat for the Environment and Infrastructure, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) and the National System Operator (ONS).
