The National Center for Monitoring and Alerts for Natural Disasters (Cemaden), linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, issued an alert for a “very high” risk of landslides in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, this Wednesday (16). ).
According to the agency, the great possibility of new occurrences of landslides is due to the high accumulation of rain in the last 24 hours, added to the forecast of more rains in the coming hours.
In addition, Cemaden warned of the forecast of rains for Thursday (17) and Friday (18), when accumulated highs are expected for the region. The agency highlighted that “these rains tend to continue for at least the next 7 days”.
In view of this meteorological forecast, the agency warned of the high risks of floods and flash floods in the Serrana Region.
“In this context, the possibility of new occurrences of flooding in the hydrographic basins of these regions is very high, mainly due to the observed accumulations, the levels of rivers and streams in the municipalities and the damage caused to the drainage system that hinder the flow of rainwater. . The occurrence of inundation, flooding and flooding in the urban areas of these regions is also not ruled out”, the agency published in its daily forecast of geo-hydrological risks.
The alert made by the agency in relation to Tuesday (15), for example, indicated moderate risk for landslides in the Mountain Region and high risk for flooding in the hydrographic basins of the area.
Also according to Cemaden, on Tuesday, in just four hours, there was a volume of rain 40% greater than normal for the entire month of February. The accumulated observed in these four hours was 260mm of rain and the historical average for the whole month is 185mm.
