Bariatric surgery, a procedure that has been performed in Brazil for almost 50 years, has evolved significantly, reducing the risks and increasing the benefits to patients with obesity. This is the evaluation of bariatric surgeon Mauricio Mauad, in an interview with CNN Brazil.
According to the expert, the struggle of the Brazilian Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery to expand access to the procedure is justified by the growing number of people with obesity in the country and worldwide. Mauad points out that the problem often starts in childhood and can lead to various health complications in the future.
“Patients who live with overweight are more likely to have diabetes, high blood pressure, liver problems, joint problems and a multitude of disease, even cancer,” the doctor explains.
Evolution and security of the procedure
The surgeon points out that the bariatric has undergone a significant evolution in recent decades. “Today we have minimally invasive access to these surgeries, greatly reducing the risk of the patient who undergoes this type of procedure,” says Mauad.
He emphasizes that the success of the surgery is directly linked to the patient’s proper preparation. “The key to success is the patient who comes well prepared for this surgery,” says the expert, noting that the procedure goes beyond physical operation.
Multidisciplinary approach
Mauad highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of obesity. “When we talk about risks today, patients who are prepared with multidisciplinary teams, not only with the surgeon, but with nutritionist, psychologist, the whole team, this patient goes better prepared and he knows the challenges of having a healthy life after surgery,” he explains.
The doctor concludes that, currently, the risks associated with bariatric surgery are considerably lower than the risks of maintaining obesity. “His risk of having a heart attack, having a cancer, is much greater than surgery today,” concludes Mauad, noting the importance of performing the procedure in specialized and qualified teams.
