Risks should be better alerted to ecotourists, says geologist

The tourism sector in Brazil moves to study improvements in safety strategies for visitors after the rockfall in the city of Capitólio, in Minas Gerais, on January 8, which killed ten people.

In an interview with CNN This Sunday (16), geologist and environmental engineer Eduardo Marques, a professor at the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV), stated that the lack of signage in risk areas frequented by tourists is a global problem.

“People need to have a perception or notion of the risk that exists in the place they want to visit. This can be done through information boards and adequate signage. The big problem in Brazil is that there are many areas of geological and ecological tourism that there is no information”, said Marques.

According to the geologist, the prevention of accidents in tourist areas must count on the participation of governments, research institutions, including public universities, and the population itself.

“We need to advance in mapping and surveying existing risks in these areas and improving information for users,” he said.
