RJ: 9-year-old girl is hit by a stray bullet and is hospitalized

A 9-year-old child was hit by a stray bullet in Rio de Janeiro, this Sunday night (26), in a square in Campo Grande, in the West Zone of the capital. With this case, Rio already has 17 children affected by firearms in the Metropolitan Region of the State.

According to witnesses, the girl was playing with the skates she got as a Christmas present when, in the presence of her parents, she was hit in the shoulder. There was no operation or any police movement at the time of the accident.

The Press Office of the Secretary of State for the Military Police reported that a team was called and found that the injured child had been rescued in a private hospital. The case was registered at the 35th Precinct (Campo Grande).

The child must undergo surgery in the next few days to remove the bullet lodged in the shoulder. The minor’s parents were at the police station to testify.

The Fogo Cruzado platform, used for statistics on violence in RJ, classifies the ages of 0 to 12 incomplete years (11 years and 364 days) as children. In 2021, Instituto Fogo Cruzado mapped 16 children shot in the Metropolitan Region of Rio: 4 died.

In the case of teenagers, Fogo Cruzado counts an even greater number of victims: 45 victims this year. Of this number, 15 died. For the platform, people aged 12 to 18 incomplete years (17 years and 364 days) are classified as teenagers.
