RJ: Castro says government requested transfer of 13 drug trafficking bosses to federal prisons

Governor Cláudio Castro (PL) confirmed this Wednesday (28) that Rio de Janeiro has already formalized the request for the transfer of 13 drug trafficking bosses prisoners in the state, to federal penitentiaries.

The governor also stated that security forces have already identified the actions of the drug traffickers, and that one of the cases has already been brought to court.

“The vacancies have already been provided by the Ministry of Justice and now we are waiting for a green light from the judiciary here, especially from the Criminal Enforcement Court, to transfer these prisoners,” said Castro.

According to Castro, in a second stage, new requests must be formalized to the federal government, totaling 30 transfers of leaders of criminal organizations operating in Rio de Janeiro the largest part of the Comando Vermelho.

Government awards R$2.5 million to police officers who seized rifles

In a ceremony held this Wednesday at BOPE, the governor also presented a prize of R$2.5 million to civil and military police officers from the state who participated in the seizure of 500 rifles in the last 10 months . The award is the result of a decree signed by Castro in August 2023, which provides for the payment of a bonus of R$5,000 for each rifle removed from circulation in the state.

“It is important to emphasize that of these 500 rifles, 438 were seized by military police in communities used by factions as bases for criminal activities, such as homicides, vehicle thefts, cargo thefts and extortion”, stated Colonel PM Marcelo de Menezes Nogueira, Secretary of Military Police.

According to PM data, more than 90% of the rifles seized were manufactured abroad demonstrating the need for joint action by security forces to combat international arms trafficking.

“We have to understand that our police have a local responsibility, once the weapon is here. What we are demanding is that the federal forces do their job in order to prevent these weapons from reaching here. This responsibility is not the responsibility of the Military Police, much less the Civil Police,” said Castro.
