RJ city declares state of emergency due to drought

The municipality of Guapimirim, in Baixada Fluminense, is in a state of emergency due to the drought. The city government is scaling up water supplies with the concessionaire Fontes da Serra. The supply changes occur from midnight to noon, daily.

According to information from the Fontes da Serra concessionaire, 40 calls have been made to date asking for water. In addition, the Guapimirim city government issued an emergency decree to provide water by tanker trucks and partnered with mining companies in the region for the same purpose.

The drought in the region has lasted 40 days. Due to the lack of rain, the city’s main rivers and tributaries are at historically low levels.

In addition to Guapimirim, the Imunana-Laranjal and Acari systems are experiencing reduced production. They are responsible for supplying water to some cities in Baixada Fluminense.

Cedae stated that in Imunana-Laranjal, yesterday (16), the operation was at 90% of total capacity and today (17) it rose to 95% with the rain in the last few hours.

In Acari, the dams that make up the system operate at 50% of the historical average for the month of September.
