The state of Rio de Janeiro had, on average, more than 400 frauds per day in the first half of 2024, according to data from the Public Security Institute (ISP).
The survey shows that 73,076 incidents of this nature were recorded between January and June of this year. This represents an average of around 401 cases per day.
The number also shows a 24% increase compared to the same period in 2023, when 58,796 cases were documented in the state.
In June 2024 alone, the state of Rio de Janeiro recorded 12,611 frauds. On average, there were around 420 per day in the region.
This also represents a 37% increase over the same month last year, when the ISP recorded 9,186 cases.
Fraud in Brazil
According to data from the Public Security Yearbook released on June 18, a case of fraud occurs every 16 seconds in Brazil.
In 2023 alone, there were almost 2 million registered cases, an increase of 8.2% compared to the previous year.
This type of crime has been on the rise since 2018 – a 360% increase in five years. However, it was during the Covid-19 pandemic that this type of crime became more common than street crimes, which decreased by 10.8% from 2022 to 2023.
There were 870,320 cases documented as property theft, compared to 1,965,353 fraud scams last year.
