RJ is the city that most values coexistence with diversity, according to research

Moving to a new country, state, city or neighborhood requires a lot of research into different factors, including the plurality of residents who live there. A study carried out between the months of May and June of this year, by Loft Dados, shows that, of the ten largest metropolises in Latin America, 25% of the residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro believe that it is important to have coexistence in the neighborhood with people of different generations. The same percentage is observed for living with neighbors with other political and social views.

Cariocas appear at the top of the percentages for four of the five questions addressed in the study. For Loft’s data and content manager, Fábio Takahashi, the information indicates an inspiration for other places in Brazil. “The results bring encouragement to Brazilian cities, and Rio in particular, at a time when much is said about the lack of dialogue and coexistence with what is different. Brazilians are more open to diversity than other countries in the region,” he points out.

In all, 4,500 people aged 18 or over were interviewed. Data represent the populations of Buenos Aires (Argentina); Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo (Brazil); Santiago (Chile); Bogotá (Colombia); Mexico City and Guadalajara (Mexico); Lima (Peru); and Caracas (Venezuela).

The cariocas just didn’t lead when it comes to the importance of having people from different regions of the country in their neighborhoods. In this question, Caracas, Venezuela, had the highest percentage indicating this coexistence as ‘very important’.

In Brazil, the second city with the largest number of inhabitants is Rio de Janeiro, with a total of 6.6 million, according to preliminary data from the 2022 Census, carried out by the IBGE. “If we add those who answered that diversity is ‘important’ to those who declared it ‘very important’, we surpass the 50% of cariocas who value living with people of other profiles. It is something very significant”, concludes Fábio.
