In the first quarter of 2024 alone, 152 rifles were seized by the Military Police in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The data takes into account the weapons seized until last Saturday (30), when two more weapons were found during an action in the Complexo de Comunidades do Campinho, in the north of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
In the last week of March alone, according to the PM, 17 weapons of war were removed from the streets in actions carried out in Baixada Fluminense and the metropolitan region of Rio.
In 2023, the PM seized 492 rifles. Data from the Public Security Institute of Rio de Janeiro, which takes into account other police forces, shows that, throughout last year, 610 rifles were removed from the streets, which corresponds to more than 10% of the total number of 6,281 firearms recovered in Rio.
In the last ten years, the number of weapons rescued by security forces exceeded 79 thousand units in the state. Of them, 4,389 were rifles.
“The aim of reducing the flow of weapons is to prevent firearms from possibly being introduced into the clandestine market, with the aim of weakening criminal organizations that dispute territories in an increasingly violent manner,” said the PM in a statement.
