RJ MP denounces members of Comando Vermelho for the death of an MMA fighter

The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) charged eight members of the Comando Vermelho criminal organization with the crime of intentional homicide of the fighter and martial arts teacher Diego Braga Alves.

The MMA fighter was murdered in Morro do Banco, Itanhangá, in Barra da Tijuca (RJ), on January 15, 2024, when he was trying to recover his motorcycle, stolen the day before the crime. The Prosecutor's Office of the 4th Specialized Criminal Investigation Prosecutor's Office of the Capital requested the preventive detention of those accused of qualified intentional homicide.

According to the complaint, the crime was committed for a base reason, since those accused suspected that the victim was a member of the militia, a rival criminal group to Comando Vermelho.

The prosecution stated that the crime was committed “by cruel means, as the teacher was executed with gunshots, subjected to a kind of 'drug court', surrounded by armed criminals”.

Furthermore, Diego Braga Alves was subsequently questioned for twenty minutes by the defendants and called a militiaman by drug traffickers. He was met with a rifle butt to his head.

The crime was also qualified by the victim's difficulty in defending himself, as he was unarmed and was outnumbered by the criminals. Furthermore, the firearms used during the crime were restricted in use.

According to the MPRJ, the maximum penalty for qualified homicide is 30 years.
