RJ: operation targets police officers suspected of providing weapons, uniforms and information to the militia

The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro is carrying out an operation, this Thursday (25), to execute 12 arrest warrants and eight search and seizure warrants against members of a militia that operates in the Bateau Mouche community, in Praça Seca, west of Rio de Janeiro. River.

According to the MP, the targets are suspected of extorting traders, street vendors and motorcycle taxi drivers who work in the region.

Sixteen people were reported by Gaeco/MPRJ, including a civil police officer and two military police officers. According to investigations, state agents provided privileged information to criminals in exchange for payments of undue amounts.

“In addition, the security agents provided military material (improperly seized) and even uniforms to criminals,” says the MP’s complaint.

Also among those reported is a man who has already been temporarily arrested, due to signs of involvement in a homicide that occurred in 2017, in São Gonçalo, in the metropolitan region of Rio. According to the Public Ministry, the suspect pretends to be a civil police officer, remaining in the inside police stations, using a weapon, uniform and badge, in addition to participating in operations in an official vehicle.

“The accused has contacts with several police units and even within the corporation’s Internal Affairs department,” says the Public Ministry.

The warrants were issued by the 1st Court Specialized in Criminal Organizations, which also ordered the suspension of the public duties of the military police officers and the civil police officer. The seizure of assets and the blocking of funds from the accounts of those reported were also determined, in addition to other precautionary measures.

The suspects will face charges of criminal association, extortion and active corruption.

In a statement, the Military Police informed that the institution's Internal Affairs Department is monitoring the progress of the operation and that it will comply with the determinations of the court orders.
