RJ: Police investigate two more deaths that may be related to rain

The Civil Police are investigating two more deaths that may be related to the rain in Rio de Janeiro. To date, 12 deaths due to the storm have been confirmed in the state. If it is confirmed that the death of the two men had the same cause, the number of victims of the rain would rise to 14.

The body of Jose Pedro Silva de Oliveira was found by firefighters in the Acari River, in the north zone, in an advanced state of decomposition.

Although the report from the Legal Medical Institute (IML) is inconclusive, there is a possibility that the death was caused by rain, as no other injuries were found.

The body of Ricardo Augusto Carvalho da Silva was found in Guanabara Bay, near Fundão, also in the north. According to the Civil Police, a complementary examination report is necessary to find out whether the death was caused by rain.

Firefighters are still searching for two missing people, a woman, who reportedly disappeared after a vehicle fell into the Botas River, in Belford Roxo, Baixada Fluminense; and a man who was reportedly swept away by the current in Complexo do Chapadão, in the north of the capital.

Since Saturday (13), more than 400 incidents related to rain have been recorded throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro. The State Department of Civil Defense and the Fire Department continue to monitor rainfall throughout the State, working with 2,400 men to prevent and minimize possible damage.

There is still a moderate risk of flooding in 30 municipalities. Furthermore, the moderate risk of collapses or landslides is present in seven cities in the state.

The weather forecast for this Wednesday (17) indicates partially cloudy skies, with the possibility of light to moderate rain showers in isolation, in the South, Serrana, Baixada Fluminense and Costa Verde regions.

Homeless and homeless

The State Secretariat for Social Development and Human Rights has collected data sent by each city hall to consolidate the number of homeless and displaced people. So far, the partial balance points to more than 47,977 people affected by the rains. At least 331 were left homeless, that is, they lost their homes, and more than 12,000 are homeless in the cities of Belford Roxo, Duque de Caxias, Nova Iguaçu, Japeri, São João de Meriti, São Gonçalo, Mesquita, Nilópolis, Nova Iguaçu and Queimados .
