RJ records 85% increase in cases of forest fires

Rio de Janeiro has seen an 85% increase in forest fires this year, according to data collected by the state’s Military Fire Department. The information shows that in the first eight months of 2024 alone, the corporation has already responded to 6,178 more incidents than in the same period last year.

According to the data, last year there were 11,037 firefighting calls in vegetation. Between January 1st and August 23rd, there were 7,417 calls. In the same period this year, there were 13,595 calls, a total of 2,558 more than in the entire previous year.

The most affected municipalities are Rio de Janeiro, São Gonçalo, Duque de Caxias, Maricá, Nova Iguaçu, Niterói, Araruama, Nova Friburgo, Campo dos Goytacazes and Volta Redonda.

In a note, the corporation emphasizes that the work of the Firefighters in fighting forest fires “is extremely important for the preservation of the environment and the safety of the population”.

The governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro (PL), stated that more than R$1 billion was invested in the corporation, integrating new technologies and resources, in addition to more than R$115 million in operational reinforcement aimed at fighting forest fires.
