RJ: suspect injured in shooting on Linha Amarela served time for drug trafficking, says TJ

A 24-year-old man was shot and arrested after an exchange of fire with military police officers this Tuesday morning (18). The suspect was identified as Alexsandro de Andrade Venâncio. Two people who were passing by died during the shooting.

The detainee remains hospitalized, in the custody of police officers, at the Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital, in Méier, where he was rescued after the incident.

A CNN found out from the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice (TJRJ) that Alexsandro was serving a sentence, free, for drug trafficking until last month.

In September 2022, he had been sentenced to one year and eight months in prison, which were replaced by restrictive measures that consisted of “providing services to the community, in welfare entities, hospitals, schools, orphanages or other similar establishments, in programs community or state, to be defined by the Criminal Executions Court, for the term of the custodial sentence”.

According to the court case, Alexsandro was arrested red-handed, on the night of September 16, 2019, for drug trafficking. The police received a call with an anonymous report that two men were selling drugs at a newsstand in the Copacabana neighborhood, in the south zone of Rio.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police found 0.8 kilograms of marijuana and 3.2 kilograms of cocaine, divided into five packages. 170 reais in cash were also seized from the suspects.

The man detained in the act along with Alexsandro was not convicted, as he died in 2020.

About the shooting

Two people who were passing through Linha Amarela, an expressway located in the north of Rio de Janeiro, died after being hit by gunshots during a shootout between military police and robbers this Tuesday morning (18).

According to the civil police, the military witnessed a motorcycle theft in front of a bus stop, close to exit 7 on the Yellow Line.

The agents approached the robbers, who allegedly tried to escape, shooting at the police officers.

At the time, the two victims, who were not involved in the incident, were hit, a 27-year-old woman and a 64-year-old elderly man.

Firefighters were called and found the deaths at the scene.

One of the criminals, Alexsandro de Andrade Venâncio, was captured by the police after also being shot. He was transported to Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital, in Méier. The other suspect managed to escape.

Two pistols were seized in the raid.

The case was reported to the 21st Police Station, in Bonsucesso, which reported the incident to the Homicide Police Station.
