Road accident in Colombia with nine dead and 31 injured

Nine people were killed and another 31 were injured on Saturday in a traffic accident that occurred in Colombia on Saturday, when a bus fell into a ravine. According to authorities, most of the victims were Venezuelan nationals trying to reach the US.

An officer of the armed forces, Colonel Luis Jesus Leon, told the press that “90% of the passengers on the bus were of Venezuelan nationality and headed north”to “the city of Cartagena”.

According to the police, dead are six men and three women.

The two victims were minors.

The accident happened around 04:20 [σ.σ. τοπική ώρα· στις 12:20 ώρα Ελλάδας] near the municipality of Plajon, in the province of Santander (northeast), on a road on the Colombian coast in the Caribbean.

The Civil Protection had initially reported that the bus with more than 40 passengers was moving on a road that connects Cucuta with Bucaramanga, in the northeastern part of the country.

The bus veered off its course and fell into a hundred meter ravine.

In visual material released by the Civil Protection, the vehicle is shown among bushes and items of clothing that have been scattered.

On Tuesday, eight people were killed when a bus collided head-on with a truck trailer in the department of La Wajira (north).

Traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death in Colombia.

In 2022, 7,200 people died in crashes on the country’s 50 million people, a 13% increase on the previous year, according to figures from the national road safety agency.
