Roadblocks cause travel suspension in Rio de Janeiro

Protests blocking several highways in the country also impacted the circulation of interstate buses in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

The capital of Rio de Janeiro had suspended trips from the Novo Rio bus station to São Paulo and Minas Gerais, in addition to states in the Northeast and South of Brazil.

According to the management of Novo Rio, on Monday (31), five thousand passengers were unable to board to their destinations, a volume 40% lower than expected for the day. This Tuesday (1st), the eve of the national holiday of All Souls’ Day, about 10,000 people were expected to board, but travel remains impacted.

“Since yesterday, the companies that operate these destinations have been actively working and monitoring all situations, so that travel is normalized, as soon as the bans are released on the roads,” said Beatriz Lima, spokeswoman for the Novo Rio bus station.

Also according to the spokeswoman, passengers who wish to do so will be able to request a refund if their trip has been suspended because of the protests.

“Passengers with scheduled trips to these destinations [SP, MG, Nordeste e Sul]the guideline is that people go directly to the bus service centers to request cancellations, rebookings and even reimbursement of tickets, at no cost”, guides Beatriz.

Until 2 pm, the Federal Highway Police (PRF) confirmed 22 points with protests on federal highways in Rio de Janeiro. Ten of them with partial bans, two with total blockades and another ten with protests, but without traffic bans.
