Roads in flooded cities are being restored, says secretary

The national secretary of Civil Defense and Protection at the Ministry of Regional Development (MDR), Colonel Alexandre Lucas, said this Monday (13th), in an interview with CNN, that the affected roads after the heavy rains that hit Bahia and Minas Gerais are being rebuilt by the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT).

“We have several aircraft from the Armed Forces, from the Federal Highway Police. Arriving at these places is no problem. The difficulty is with some communication demand. The main damages are being restored by Dnit. Those places we are raising together with the city halls. We have the resources to rebuild all the bridges and support the reconstruction of public infrastructure”, declared Colonel Alexandre Lucas.

The federal government recognizes an emergency in 17 cities in Bahia and 31 in Minas Gerais. According to the secretary, it is necessary “that the waters subside and that the damages are apparent to carry out this survey and release these resources.”

The government of Bahia differs from the numbers, and says that 51 cities are in emergency: Alcobaça, Amélia Rodrigues, Anagé, Baixa Grande, Belmonte, Boa Vista do Tupim, Camacan, Canavieiras, Caravelas, Cocos, Encruzilhada, Eunapolis, Guaratinga, Iaçu, Ibicoara , Ibicuí, Ibirapuã, Ilhéus, Itabela, Itapebi, Itaberaba, Itacaré, Itagimirim, Itamaraju, Itambé, Itanhém, Itapetinga, Itaquara, Itarantim, Jaguaquara, Jiquiriçá, Jucuruçu, Lajedão, Medilio de Soupearani, Maragocio Mucugê, Mucuri, Mutuípe, Nova Viçosa, Porto Seguro, Prado, Ribeira do Pombal, Ruy Barbosa, Santa Cruz Cabrália, Santanópolis, Teixeira de Freitas, Teolândia and Vereda.

“We have already released resources in the amount of almost R$9 million reais; R$8.7 million for cities that presented their work plans in less than 24 hours. The presentation of the plan is a constitutional obligation and is demanded from us by the control bodies, but we are eliminating all the bureaucracy”, said Marinho.

According to the latest survey by the Civil Defense and Protection Superintendence of the State of Bahia, ten people died and 267 were injured. Another 220,297 inhabitants were affected by the storms. Among them, 15,199 were left homeless and 6,371 homeless.
