The screenwriters of “Deadpool & Wolverine” Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, revealed that Robert Downey Jr. was invited for a special appearance in the film as Iron Man, but refused the offer .
At the time, no one involved in the film knew that Downey Jr. planned to return to the Marvel universe as Doctor Doom. Now that this Marvel secret has been revealed, the denial makes sense to them.
“We wanted him to do a cameo. We had written that scene with Happy [persongaem interpretado por Jon Favreau] and Downey,” Wernick said in an interview with IndieWire.
The scene in question appears at the beginning of the film, when Deadpool tries to win a spot in the Avengers lineup and meets Happy Hogan, played by Favreau. The idea was that Downey Jr. as Iron Man would also be present in the scene.
“Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about Doctor Doom,” Wernick added. “And there was no way he could do both.”
“And then we said, ‘Downey’s not going to say no to Ryan Reynolds, right? Nobody says no to Ryan Reynolds.’ And Ryan put a lot of pressure on him. We wrote the scenes, Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know was this Doctor Doom thing,” the screenwriter added.
According to Rhett Reese, Downey Jr.’s refusal was the only “no” they received among all the artists invited to participate without scheduling reasons.
“We would have loved to have Downey,” Reese said. “But at the same time, I think Marvel had this ace up their sleeve, which is that he was about to come back in a different character. So to have him as Tony Stark? Knowing that Doctor Doom was coming right after that? It just didn’t make sense.”
Just days after the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” in theaters, Marvel announced Downey Jr.’s return to the universe as Doctor Doom during San Diego Comic-Con.
