Robert Downey Jr. Says “Oppenheimer” Resurrected His Post-Marvel Credibility

Robert Downey Jr. won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role as physicist Lewis Strauss in “Oppenheimer” during the Bafta — known as the British Oscars — on Sunday night (18).

Upon accepting the award, Downey once again thanked the film's director, Christopher Nolan. When remembering the key moments of his career, the actor's speech went viral, as the actor cites his role for more than a decade as Tony Stark, Iron Man, in Marvel films.

“I played a guy named Tony in the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] for more or less 12 years. Recently, this guy, Chris Nolan, suggested I try something more subtle in a desperate effort to maybe resurrect my credibility,” Downey said, making the audience laugh.

“I share this award with the other nominees. It has been an exceptional year”, he added.

Shortly before the premiere of “Oppenheimer”, Robert Downey Jr. had already declared that he considered this the best film of his entire career.

During press interviews for the film's premiere, Downey was moved to thank Nolan for the role: “I was at a point in my career where I needed someone who had a vision of what was possible for me that I couldn't see. by myself.”

Robert Downey Jr. is up for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Oppenheimer.” The film was the big winner at Bafta on Sunday, taking home seven awards, including Best Film.
