Marvel fans shouldn’t expect that Robert Downey Jr. return as Tony Stark/Iron Man. The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair that there are no plans to resurrect the character after his last appearance in “Avengers: Endgame” 2019.
“Let’s keep this momentum going and not touch it again,” Feige said. “We all worked hard for many years to get to this, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”
Last month, rumors about the character’s possible return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe began to emerge.
Downey Jr. was hesitant to even do reshoots of the last film, according to the film’s co-director, Joe Russo .
“We had already said goodbye with tears in our eyes on the last day of filming. Everyone has changed emotionally,” Russo told the publication. “We promised him it would be the last time we would make him do this – ever.”
Anthony Russo who co-directed “Avengers: Endgame” added: “It was a difficult thing for him to go back to get that line.”
“When he [Downey Jr.] came back, we were filming on a stage right in front of where he auditioned for Tony Stark,” said Anthony Russo.
“So his last line as Tony Stark was filmed literally feet away from his original audition, which got him the role.”
According to Feige, he had to defend Downey Jr. to win the role of Stark in the Marvel franchise due to his substance abuse problems that led to him serving 15 months in prison.
“It all comes down to the fact that the Marvel board is nervous about putting all of its chips on its future films on someone who has had these legal problems in the past,” Feige said.
“I wasn’t very good — and I’m still not very good — at taking no for an answer. But I also don’t beat myself up in the chest to try to get what I want. I try to figure out ways to make it clear to other people why we should move in this direction. And that’s when the idea of a screen test came about.”
