Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has been discharged from the Banska Bystrica hospital, where he was treated after the May 15 assassination attempt, and has been taken to his home in the capital Bratislava, the hospital said today. Fico, 59, was attacked by a gunman on May 15 while greeting supporters after a cabinet meeting in the central Slovakian town of Hadlova. He was shot four times in the abdomen and was rushed to a hospital in Banska Bystrica where he underwent two hours-long surgeries. The perpetrator of the attack, 71-year-old Jurai Tsintula, was arrested and remanded in custody, accused of attempted premeditated murder. The incident – the first serious assassination attempt on a European political leader in more than 20 years – underscores the deep polarization in the political life of this central European country of 5.4 million people.
