Roberta Alcamo she is from Palermo and has just completed her high school diploma. If you ask her to tell about herself she replies that she is a strange girl, because she arrives at school late (but now it doesn’t happen anymore because she finished it), she can’t swim and above all she has an unbridled passion for her polar bear costume.
All this world, Roberta has turned into a YouTube channel, opened in January 2020, in which she creates fantastic adventures that bring the people who follow her inside the virtual universe of Roblox: an online video game where you can create characters to share with others.
Roberta recently published her first comic In search of the legendary pet (Rizzoli), who in a few weeks shot to the top of the charts and allowed her to meet in person the many boys and girls who follow her every day online. We met her, to understand more of the world of a gamer.
Who is a gamer?
«A gamer is a person who plays video games for passion, who enters a world where he can experience emotions or stories that cannot normally be experienced in real life. In my case, thanks to the web, being a gamer started a professional career ».
At your presentations everything is sold out. What effect does it have?
«I only know that with willpower and dedication you can reach any goal and become a gamer who transmits stories with video games. If you are dreaming of something then you will surely get it. All this has changed me absolutely for the better, I study every day to excel at what I do even if I still personally feel far from being the best. I learned patience and the analysis of the mistakes that are made until a solution is found to reach one’s goal ».
How do you reconcile life as a youtuber with that as a student?
“Now I’ve just finished school. Life as a YouTuber and student was a lot of stressful but not impossible and I never went badly in school, with a good organization and driven by the strength of good will even if tired I managed to fit the two things together giving both the right importance”.
What is the goal of your videos?
«The goal of my videos is to give a message to my and viewers, to tell stories, make them cry, angry, laugh or simply find someone to keep them company after a bad day. In short, I feel friends with my spectators. And I feel I have a unique bond with them even if I don’t even know all their faces or their names ».
Why did you decide to write this book?
«I love to tell stories and video games are a huge palette on which I can let my imagination run wild. I have often, and still do, write video scripts. Not only did I write a book for a small dream of mine but to get my stories in paper form ».
Have you found your legendary pet?
«Well obviously I know the answer to this question but it’s up to the readers to find out by buying my comic. Thus any doubts will be resolved ».
