Defense of the former federal deputy Roberto Jefferson (PTB) denied, in a statement sent to the Federal Court of Justice that the former parliamentarian will participate in the 1st Brazilian Conservative Congress in Florida, which will be held from next Saturday (11).
The response of Jefferson’s lawyers came after a questioning made by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case against the former deputy. Moraes warned that participation in the event would mean failure to comply with precautionary measures imposed by the STF.
According to the defense, “the news that the petitioner intends to attend the 1st Brazilian Conservative Congress in Florida is not true, since he does not know the origin of the false information, which he vehemently repudiates.”
“It is important to clarify that the petitioner, at no time, made any contact with the possible leaders of the aforementioned event, nor did he accept to participate in it. This is because he is under house arrest combined with precautionary measures, which are being duly complied with”, said the deputies.
Despite the defense’s manifestation, Jefferson’s name appears at the event (which is being organized by the right-wing group Yes Brazil USA) along with other STF targets, such as Allan dos Santos and deputy Daniel Silveira (PTB-RJ). Tickets are being sold through the EventBrite platform.
STF marks resumption of trial
The STF has scheduled for June 17 the resumption of the complaint trial against Roberto Jefferson. In February, the minister Kassio Nunes Marques asked for a view (more time for analysis) in the process that made the former parliamentarian a defendant for crimes of homophobia, incitement to the crime of slander and defamation against members of Congress and the Supreme Court.
On the occasion, ministers Alexandre de Moraes (rapporteur), Gilmar Mendes, Edson Fachin, Roberto Barroso, Dias Toffoli and Cármen Lúcia voted to fully receive the complaint filed against Roberto Jefferson.
The rapporteur of the action, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, voted to send the action to the Federal Court in the Federal District.
“The complaint, in a clear and objective way, was concerned with indicating the seriousness of the manifestations of the accused, stating that the speeches he made are a strong attack against the Democratic State, having brutal potential harmful to democratic institutions, as they were intended to try to prevent the free exercise of the Legislative Power”, said Moraes.
