Roberto Kalil talks about the importance of sleeping well on CNN Vital Signs

Humans are capable of generating approximately 70,000 thoughts a day. That would translate to 3000 thoughts per hour, 50 per minute, and approximately one per second. The human brain and mind are a machine that works at full speed, without respite. Where does rest come in?

O CNN Vital Signs this Saturday (19) shows the importance of sleep to live well. It is during sleep that the organism performs the main restorative functions of the body, such as tissue repair, muscle growth, protein synthesis and brain rest.

According to the doctor Geraldo Lorenzi Filho director of the Sleep Laboratory at Incor, sleep is essential for resting the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

“Blood pressure drops, heart rate drops, and more and more people know that it is also fundamental for the central nervous system, it is the time to drain the toxins that accumulate in the brain throughout the day, good for fixing memory and harmonization of the body. Hormones are secreted, it is enough for us to go one night without sleep, and we realize how fundamental sleep is.”

In the long run, not getting enough sleep increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and an increased risk of depression. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 9.3% of Brazilians suffer from anxiety and Brazil is the first country in the world in number of anxious people.

“Having insomnia doesn’t mean going one night or another without sleep, because you’re worried about something, or because you left a task unfinished and you can’t relax until you come back and finish that work. Insomnia is a condition that means at least three nights without sleep during the week, for a minimum period of three months”, warns the psychiatrist and professor at the Faculty of Medicine of USP, Carmita Abdo .

But how to deal with modern life, taking care of all the tasks and thoughts, and sleeping in a healthy way and with the ideal time, which is increasingly scarce, to repair and clean our memory for the next day? O CNN Vital Signs shows the best treatments for those who suffer from insomnia and anxiety.

Experts also show that sleep disorders have different therapies, starting with sleep apnea, where it is necessary to prevent the passage of air through the throat from closing while the person sleeps.

There are several types of treatments that the program will show, such as the main one, which is the use of a pressure generator called CPAP, an air flow generator that is not oxygen and the person uses it when they go to sleep.

“It’s a mask attached to the person’s face and this air pressurizer will prevent the throat from closing while they sleep. The person stops snoring and apnea”, explains the doctor Luciano Drager president of the Brazilian Sleep Association.

And how many hours should a person sleep a day? O CNN Vital Signs demystifies the relationship between the number of hours slept per night.

“There is, first of all, a very large variability in relation to age group, for example, a baby sleeps for 18 hours and a child sleeps for 10, 12, 14 hours. Adolescents need to sleep a lot, these are the ones most at risk of having restricted hours of sleep. Already the adult, on average, needs to sleep at least 6 hours. There are people who are long sleepers who need 7, 8 hours and there are people who need less than 6 hours”, says dr. Lorenzi Filho .

And dream? Why do people dream? O CNN Vital Signs heard the neuroscientist Siddhartha Ribeiro professor at the Brain Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN).

“We live in a society where sleep and dreams are at risk. Dreams are an expression of our desires and our fears. They are a very old mechanism, which tries to provide an answer for the future. So I don’t know what will happen, but I have experience from the past. Dreams allow us to recombine memories and create scenarios of possible futures. We can say that, in human history, dreams were fundamental for the Genesis of culture, for the production of new ideas, and for cultural accumulation.”, he explains.

CNN Sinais Vitais, with Dr. Roberto Kalil, will air on Saturday, August 19, at 6:30 pm, on CNN Brasil.
