Do robots feel empathy? It would seem so. This is demonstrated by an experiment conducted at Columbia University in New York capable according to which even in machines it is possible to ignite a spark of empathy.
The machine that could observe the other correctly predicted its movements in over 98% of cases without there having been any programming and was able to repeat them. He was therefore able to put himself autonomously in the shoes of another, to feel and understand what the other sees, feels or wants, that is, one of the requirements of the theory of mind up to the prerogative of men and primates.
The experiment was published in the journal Scientific Reports and it is the first proof that even in robots equipped with artificial intelligence there may be the ability to understand and anticipate their actions. The next step is the ability to autonomously predict actions to be performed by interacting more easily with humans, for example in caring for, and with other automata, in the case of rescue operations.
«By simply observing the behavior of the other, a very simple robot equipped with artificial intelligence was able to predict their behavior. This is what happens during many of the human interactions, and between the machines it occurred without the need to provide any information, ”explained a Republic Cristina Becchio, of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa.
