Many people have gotten used to interacting with their personal assistants on cell phones. But scientists at Kyoto University in Japan have gone further and are teaching a robot to laugh.
According to the authors of the study, released this Thursday (15), they are developing an AI (Artificial Intelligence) system that aims to recreate the nuances of humor, laughing in the right way and at the right time.
The intention of the research is to help in the interactions between people and machines that use artificial intelligence systems, so that conversations occur more naturally.
They gathered data from more than 80 conversations between college students and the robot, named Erica, who was operated by actresses.
From these interactions, a learning system was trained to decide whether and how to laugh, as the system could react with social laughter (out of politeness or shame).
The researchers believe it would take more than 20 years for a natural human-machine interaction to actually occur.
Led by Koji Inoue, the scientists aim to expand the study, incorporating other languages, dialogue contexts, cultures and large-scale data.
