Rocha collapses in Capitólio (MG) and hits boats; a death has been confirmed

The Military Fire Department of Minas Gerais confirmed in the early afternoon of this Saturday (8) an accident involving speedboats in the region of Lago de Furnas, in Capitólio, Minas Gerais.

Preliminary data confirm a death. A video circulating on social networks, whose veracity was confirmed by firefighters, shows the moment when a large block of stones collapses into the water, where it is possible to see three boats, two of which were close to the collapse (see above).

To CNN, Lieutenant Pedro Aihara, a spokesman for the MG Fire Department, confirmed that one person had died and said that the condition could progress to a second death. He also said that there are between fifteen and twenty people directly affected by the incident.

The lieutenant also says that there were around seventy people doing tourism in the region.

In addition to the Air Operations Battalion, divers are already working at the site.

Aihara explains that there are risks of new landslides, as there are sedimentary rocks in the region. “It is possible that there will be new accidents, because rainwater penetrates rocks, which have less resistance to the action of water and wind”.

Much sought after by tourists, the Capitol region has natural canyons, good waters for navigation and water fun. In addition, the region is close to urban areas, where there are hotels, inns and summer houses to meet the demand of visitors.

The lieutenant’s recommendation is that, at a time of heavy rain, people keep a safe distance from rock structures. “This recommendation can be reassessed after the firefighters’ analysis”, he says.
