Rock bar owner killed in SP was trained to combat harassment of women

Carlos “Nenê” Monteiro, 58 years old, owner of Malta Rock Bar, in the south of São Paulo, had completed training offered by the Government of São Paulo to combat harassment against women in establishments in São Paulo.

“Nenê”, as he was known, was killed in the early hours of last Sunday (16). According to the victim’s family, the person responsible for the homicide was harassing an employee of the establishment and Carlos intervened in the action before the crime was committed. The suspect was arrested red-handed and the knife he used was seized by the police.

On that occasion, the victim received a certificate from the Virtual University of the State of São Paulo (Univesp) for the training, which covered 30 hours. The course is part of the “Don’t be silent” protocol, developed by the state government. Look:

The program aims to train bar owners and employees in São Paulo municipalities to combat violence against women in these places.

“Through this initiative, establishments have all the guidelines and courses so that their employees know how to provide adequate assistance to victims of harassment, abuse, violence and harassment: from leaving the premises safely to activating the public health and safety network ”, explains the Secretariat of Policies for Women.

“Don’t be silent” provides a seal of recognition for bars according to the level of training of employees.

On the project page, the government recommends that bar owners and employees intervene in possible cases of violence or harassment against women in their bar environments:

“According to the Consumer Protection Code (Federal Law No. 8,078/1990), establishments are responsible for the safety of all people on their premises. If you see violence or harassment in your establishment, you should ask the woman if she needs help and inform the attacker that this behavior will not be tolerated.”

The case

The owner of a bar in the south of São Paulo died after being injured with a pocket knife on Saturday night (15). Carlos “Nenê” Monteiro, 58 years old, owned the Malta Rock Bar, located in the Mirandópolis neighborhood.

According to the victim’s family, the person responsible for the homicide was harassing an employee of the establishment and Carlos intervened in the action before the crime was committed.

According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the Military Police were called and, upon arriving at the scene, they found the victim dead.

The suspect, Diego de Almeida Pereira, aged 34, was restrained at the scene by witnesses until the police arrived and ended up being arrested in the act. The knife used in the crime was seized.

The case was registered as a homicide in the 16th DP, in Vila Clementino.

According to the statements obtained by CNN , the suspect displayed strange behavior and even harassed customers and fought with an employee of the establishment. “Nenê” would have even expelled the man from the place before the incident.
