Rock in Rio will ban the presence of election candidates on the festival stages

Rock in Rio announced, this Friday (26), that it will not allow the presence of candidates for the October elections on the stages of the festival, which will take place between the 2nd and 11th of September.

In a report published on the event’s official Instagram, the organizers explained that the event will take place “for the first time in 37 years, during an election period and, therefore, is subject to the specific laws in force during that period”.

“As a result, the organization has decided that the presence of any candidate in these elections will not be allowed on its stages”, adds the report.

The organization also recommended companies, institutions and artists involved in the festival at the Olympic Park in the capital of Rio to be aware of the electoral law.

Political demonstrations by artists and the public

The doubt regarding the legality of political manifestations by artists, or even the public, during cultural events is one of the most frequent questions in relation to Brazilian elections.

O “CNN FAQ Election 2022 ” brings together these main doubts and explains that, according to the Federal Supreme Court (STF), demonstrations are allowed.

There is an understanding that the expression of support for a particular candidate by an artist does not constitute irregularity in the electoral campaign.

The same goes for expressions of support from the audience present and are guaranteed by the right to freedom of expression.
