The Ain al-Assad base, in the west, received an attack with rockets and drones this evening Iraqwhere American soldiers and members of the international coalition are stationed, as reported by the Reuters news agency citing two security officials.
Several explosions occurred inside the facilitiesaccording to the same source, with no information on casualties so far.
Ain al-Assad Air Base is located in the western province of Anbar.
In recent days, pro-Iranian armed groups have threatened to launch attacks against US interests in Iraq because of Washington’s support for attacks launched by the Israel in the Gaza Strip, from which thousands of civilians have been killed.
In previous years, bases hosting international coalition troops were often targeted by rocket and drone attacks. However, by the summer of 2022, these attacks had subsided. Such attacks were usually not followed by a claim of responsibility. The US blamed organizations close to Tehran.
About 2,500 Americans and another 1,000 military personnel from member countries of the international coalition are currently stationed at three bases of the Iraqi armed forces.
