Rogério Marinho and Lindbergh Farias debate BC independence

The autonomy of the Central Bank (BC) has been questioned by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). During an interview with RedeTV! on Thursday (2), the petista raised his tone and said that he will “wait for this guy to finish his term to evaluate what the independence of the Central Bank meant”.

To discuss the president’s criticisms of the monetary authority, the CNN held a panel this Sunday (12) with the presence of senator Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) and deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ).

For Marinho, the current higher interest rate is common in other countries and a reflection of the measures adopted during the pandemic. “This pandemic that devastated the world determined that several economies took countercyclical measures that greatly affected their internal indebtedness and generated an inflationary process of an excessive supply of liquidity,” he said.

Farias argues that the independence of the Central Bank does not mean “immunity from questioning”. The deputy compared the interest rate in Brazil with the indicator in other countries and criticized the impacts generated on economic growth.

“The BC has to control inflation, but there is a point that is the generation of jobs, economic growth. This is very important as the economy is slowing down. The growth forecast for this year, according to the Focus bulletin, is 0.79%. That’s why Lula is fighting interest rates, this interest rate slows down the economy,” he said.
