Romania: Anti -Semitism legislation is tightened, the president’s appeal has been rejected

The Romanian Supreme Court rejected yesterday the appeal of Central President Nicusor Dan against the law that provides for tougher penalties to those who promote anti -Semitism and hate rhetoric after the presidential elections that marked the rise. In June, parliament has updated the law that prohibits fascist leaders from being honored to provide prison sentences from now on those who promote anti -Semitism and xenophobia through social media platforms. The law also increases imprisonment penalties for those who establish or fall into racist organizations. However, the President estimated that the law does not clearly determine what the fascists are and this could lead his arbitrary interpretation by the judges. The Supreme Court, unanimously, rejected its objections.
