A group of divers from the Romanian Armed Forces is trying to neutralize a mine that was found about 70km off the coast of Romania in the Black Sea, the Romanian Ministry of Defense announced today, while other mines have been located in recent days.
Earlier today, Turkish authorities secured a mine near the border with Bulgaria, while on Saturday they neutralized another, setting off a powerful explosion north of Istanbul.
Russia’s main intelligence service said earlier this month that several mines had been swept into the sea after being cut off by cables near Ukrainian ports. Kyiv denied the allegation, calling it a misinformation and an attempt to block parts of the sea.
Romania borders the Black Sea with Bulgaria, Turkey and Ukraine, which were invaded by Russia a month ago.
The mine was spotted earlier today by fishermen and they informed the Romanian navy.
