Romania says NATO must respond to Russian intrusions into country’s airspace

Romania has called on NATO to adopt a “robust and coordinated” response against intrusions into the country’s airspace during Russian missile or drone attacks on Ukraine, a request made by Defense Minister Angel Tilvar on Wednesday (18).

The eastern countries of the military alliance, whose defense ministers met in Bucharest on Wednesday, have repeatedly said that Russia’s activities in the Black Sea region and beyond are a source of great concern.

Earlier this month, NATO countries Romania and Latvia reported Russian drones crashing after violating their own airspace, prompting official calls for joint action to counter Russian air incursions.

Last week, Ukraine accused Russia of using strategic strikes to target a civilian grain ship in a missile attack in Black Sea waters near Romania, further escalating tensions between Moscow and the military alliance.

“The B9 states (the countries on the eastern border of the alliance) are deeply concerned about the repeated incursions of Russian drones and missiles into NATO airspace, in Poland, Romania, Latvia, as well as the escalation of tensions along NATO’s eastern flank,” Tilvar told reporters.

“That is why a robust and coordinated response at an allied level is necessary, as well as the application of the rotary air defense and integrated anti-missile model as soon as possible.”

Polish Deputy Defense Minister Pawel Zalewski said the NATO defense ministers’ meeting in October will need to address the destruction of drones violating allied airspace.

“We confirm hybrid attacks against allies, as well as Belarus’ participation in Russia’s actions,” Zalewski added.

Romania shares a 650km border with Ukraine, and Russian drone strikes have been reported frequently in the past year. The country is also close to Ukrainian ports on the Danube River, which are frequent targets for Russians.
