Romania: The Supreme Court postpones its decision on the presidential elections

Romania’s Supreme Court postponed until December 2nd a ruling on annulling the result of the first round of the presidential election, after a shock election result that raised suspicions of foreign meddling in the election campaign. The Court will issue its decision the day after the parliamentary elections to be held on Sunday. The 62-year-old independent far-right politician Calin Gheorgescu, who had polled in the single digits before last Sunday’s election, clinched a victory that raised questions about how such an unexpected development was possible. Thus, he secured a place in the second round scheduled for December 8. Romanian authorities say they have found evidence of involvement by hostile actors in the election campaign, and the NATO and European Union member state is awaiting a decision from the Constitutional Court to validate the results.
