Romantic weekend in Borghetto sul Mincio, surrounded by nature

A village that has the Feast of the Knot of Love as the main event of its calendar can only be a romantic place. AND Borghetto sul Mincio, hamlet of Valeggio sul Mincio, almost halfway between Mantua and Verona. It is no coincidence that this small village, counted among the most beautiful in Italy, has an almost double nature, which blends Lombard and Venetian features (it is in the province of Verona). Its position, along the Mincio river, has made it a strategic point of passage. Today the medieval village with its houses and its stone mills is still perfectly preserved and is a wonderful surprise for anyone who arrives there for the first time.

Borghetto sul Mincio it seems suspended on the water and the strong link between nature and its history is still visible. Valeggio, together with Borghetto, was in fact built near an ancient ford, a crossroads between the waterway and the land route and for this reason it has always been a place of passage for travelers, pilgrims and merchants. A tavern-inn is also documented, one thaberna, as early as 1300. And if pilgrims are less frequent today, Borghetto sul Mincio, on the other hand, is much loved by couples.

The Feast of the Knot of Love takes place every June, which is also the name with which the typical dish is called here, the tortellino. The party was born from a legend that tells of the love born between the nymph Silvia and captain Malco. Before disappearing into the water, the nymph left the captain a knotted gold handkerchief as a token of love. Later, when the two reunited and went to live together in the waters, they left that handkerchief on the banks of the river. It is told how the women and girls of that time, during the holidays, had told the story of the two lovers, pulling a dough as thin as silk, cut and knotted like a golden handkerchief and enriched with a delicate filling. Thus was born the legend of Tortellino di Valeggio.

Borghetto is made up of a handful of houses, an ancient village of mills in complete symbiosis with its river (which can be visited). The village looks like a slide from the Middle Ages so well it is preserved and especially when the light is soft, at dawn or dusk, it is a charm. As well as when the fog envelops the houses, making everything even more fascinating.

Walking through the small streets of Borghetto is a special experience and perhaps the most striking thing is the background water noise that accompanies our every step. For the most romantic souls, the advice is to book a table for lunch or dinner in a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the village or the valley.

If eating in one of the many restaurants in Valeggio sul Mincio is a must, to sleep you can choose a b & b – there are some also used in the old stone houses of Borghetto, or you can sleep in Verona, a few kilometers away. The Grand Hotel des Arts Verona by HNH, recently restored, combines the elegance of a historic building with an Art Nouveau style and the comfort of modern rooms, all within walking distance of the center.
