Romeo is Juliet: the review of the film with Pilar Fogliati

TO Giovanni Veronesi an accent was enough to transform one of the greatest works of Shakespeare into something different and fresher. Romeo and Juliet marks the Tuscan director's return to cinema, four years after his last one All for 1 – 1 for all Veronesi investigates behind the scenes of the shows theatrical, where renowned directors and talented actors deal with all the oddities that the theatrical environment throws at them. The protagonist of the film is Pilar Foliatedin the role of Victory, a young actress with great talent who carries with her the consequences of an old mistake, when she “stole” another artist's text and used it for a tour in order to earn some money. The remnants of her past are always present in every professional experience, even during an audition with Federico Landi Porrini (Sergio Castellitto)a historic director now considered outdated, having arrived at his last show, Romeo and Juliet, which he will present at the Festival Of Spoleto. During the audition, Vittoria was deemed valid but rejected by Landi Porrini and the production who feared repercussions and bad reviews from critics. Before leaving the stage she is humiliated by the director, who motivates her refusal as follows: «I don't take children, animals or thieving artists». Disconsolate, she tries to take revenge: thanks to the help of her friend make-up artist (Geppi Cucciari) will disguise herself as a man, taking the fictitious appearance of Eight November managing to get the part, thus finding herself defending her double identity, a situation that becomes complicated when her boyfriend (Dominic Diele) will get the part of Mercutio.

Don't expect to see a simple love film, because that's not the case. Romeo and Juliet it is a biting comedy, full of satire, in which love is present but is not the main course. The backroom of the world of entertainment proves to be full of charm, as never before in this historical period does he find himself experiencing surreal situations which are mocked in the film: the tiktoker who are cast, the actors who are all a bit the same and the directors who don't know how to keep up with the times. In many passages it refers to the atmospheres of Boris and in one scene it is almost mentioned: when Landi Porrini calls an actress a bitch during the audition, reminding us of the Corinna Of Carolina Crescentini and the unattainable Kidney Ferretti Of Francis Pannofino. The strong point of the entire film concerns the characterization of the characters, entrusted to a cast that does not disappoint. Castellittoafter the test in Aeneashis son's film Peterconfirms his golden moment, staging an excellent performance, the director he plays ends up being likeable, despite being cynical and sometimes evil. Pilar Fogliati is perfecthis Vittoria is fully successful, he manages to best interpret a well-thought-out and delineated character during the scenes, both when Victory both when it takes the form of November Eight. Both maintain their role as absolute protagonists also thanks to the right dimension given to the secondary characters, never too intrusive and precious on many occasions, especially in the cases of the fantastic make-up artist played by Geppi Cucciari and Vittoria's boyfriend represented by Domenico Diele, returned to the big screen after 9 years spent away from cinema due to his legal problems. He praised the performances of Serena De Ferrari and Margherita Buy, as well as Maurizio Lombardi and Alessandro Haber. The film grows as the minutes pass, reaching its peak and maintaining it until the end, offering a non-sappy alternative for Valentine's Day and being among the best Italian comedies of the last period.
