History
The Hotel de Russie is a Roman jewel between Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps, and unites the classic and the cosmopolitan in its building, designed in the early 19th century by the architect Giuseppe Valadier, who rebuilt the nearby Piazza del Popolo. During its eventful history, the building has played many roles, among them being the headquarters of the main Italian television channel.
In 1917 artist Pablo Picasso and poet Jean Cocteau stayed at the Russie as they prepared to stage the first Cubist ballet. Friends occupied adjoining rooms and leaned out of windows to pick oranges from the garden.
The hotel has a secret garden, also designed by Valadier, with 2,800 square meters filled with palm trees, trees and roses.
