Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is on a wave of candidates who easily won re-election in the U.S. midterm on Tuesday, the start of a night that could seal a divided government and reduce Democratic President Joe Biden’s power in Washington.
DeSantis, a possible candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, defeated Democratic Representative Charlie Crist, according to a projection by Edison Research. Seven Republicans also won US Senate seats, according to Edison, although no results are unexpected.
With most polls closed in half of the 50 US states, the initial results would not change the balance of power in the 50-50 Senate, which Democrats currently control thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris’s tie-breaking vote.
