Currently, the clown Ronald McDonald is the main mascot of the McDonald’s fast food chain. But it was not always so. Some time ago, he was accompanied by an entire class.
Now, one of those characters has just made a triumphant return to the United States. Grimace, or Shake, here in Brazil, took over the brand’s social networks to celebrate its anniversary in June, accompanied by a special promotion that features a purple milkshake.
Grimace is a purple creature with no defined race. He first emerged in the 1970s as a villain called Evil Grimace who stole people’s milkshakes. With his growing popularity, he became known for sharing the joy of this drink and became best friends with Ronald.
In 2012, McDonald’s tweeted that Grimace was “the personification of a milkshake, although others still insist he is a taste bud.”
As part of the marketing campaign, Grimace took over McDonald’s accounts, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and kicked off the celebrations with an out-of-frame post. “It’s Grimace and I’m taking control.”
“Do you want to come to my party???? finally got my own meal and purple shake (sic),” he announces in another Instagram post, including the character in an influencer-worthy setting.
The interactions conquered the nostalgic fans and even the youngest ones. In the week of the 12th, the campaign’s official launch, interest in the character and searches related to his special meal reached the maximum level of interest on Google Trends.
According to the website Insider, the responses were immense and varied: one tiktoker cosplayed to get his lunch and one even got a tattoo in honor of the character’s return.

Other fans on Twitter honored Grimace with custom art, including a follower who turned the character into a gay icon by participating in LGBT pride month events.

Grimace’s special meal is made up of a Big Mac, French fries and his purple milkshake, which has also generated a growing number of online searches for its flavor — berries with vanilla ice cream, McDonald’s confirmed to the Today website. with.
McDonald’s also released a Game Boy Color game called “Grimace’s Birthday”, available on developer Krool Toys’ website.
