Ronin will move to a new consensus mechanism

The Ethereum sidechain Ronin involved in Axie Infinity will switch to the Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) consensus algorithm and become the basis for other blockchain games. About this in a conversation with CoinDesk Sky Mavis co-founder Jeff Zirlin said.

In March 2022, North Korean hackers from the Lazarus Group took advantage of an exploit in the Ronin code and withdrew crypto assets worth approximately $625 million.

The attack kept the network down for several months. Her restart took place at the end of June.

A year after the incident, Sky Mavis announced plans to increase the decentralization of Ronin and enter into cooperation with other studios to develop games based on it.

DPoS will provide users with the ability to stake a utility token by participating in a transaction confirmation mechanism.

“Anyone with at least 250,000 RON will be able to participate in block production by becoming a validator. Any holder of tokens will have the right to choose them,” Sky Mavis said in a statement.

Zirlin did not rule out the transition to second-level solutions. The latter, like Ronin, eliminate the problems of high fees and slow transaction processing in Ethereum, but rely on the security system of the “parent blockchain”.

The co-founder of Sky Mavis noted that the company has been working to reimburse users for losses incurred as a result of the hack. The team also took other technical steps — in addition to updating the Ronin consensus mechanism — to prevent similar attacks in the future.

“We have strengthened internal security measures, increased the number of specialists and improved our network monitoring,” he explained.

Zirlin announced the work of Tribes Studio, Bali Games, Directive Games and Bowled.io (companies with alumni from DICE, LucasArts, Square Enix and Ubisoft) to create new blockchain games that use the Sky Mavis-backed sidechain.

Partners can create completely new games on top of Ronin, including those based on the studio’s intellectual property.

“We’re moving beyond Axie, incubating, and truly becoming a platform for launching the best and most thoughtful games on Web3,” Zirlin concluded.

Earlier, cloud service provider Alibaba Cloud announced the creation of a “blockchain laboratory” with a similar purpose. A similar initiative was announced by Immutable with Polygon.
