“Roque Santeiro” actor on the artists’ retreat: “vital importance”

The actor Rui Rezende, 87, known for his role as Professor Astromar Junqueira in the soap opera “Roque Santeiro” from TV Globo, 1985, talked about his change to the artists’ retreat and the importance that the space has for the artistic community.

In an exclusive interview with CNN he said that the complex is “fundamental to all people who work in the artistic area. The state of São Paulo, the richest of the federation, does not have such a community here, so I think it is of vital importance for us here in Rio.”

Rui Rezende moved to the artists’ retreat in 2019, after his mate chooses to live in Miami, United States, to be close to his daughter. He accompanied her in the adaptation in the country, but chose to return because he was no longer able to work to help support his family.

Back in Brazil, he was living in his wife’s apartment in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, but considered him too large and wanted her to put the property to rent to get an income with the property.

Because he considered himself a “lone wolf”, he said he had no options for friends or family to house it, so the Minas Gerais artists union helped him to get a place in the artists’ retreat.

The actor who participated in soap operas such as “Roque Santeiro” (1985), “Aquarela do Brasil” (2000), “Bang Bang” (2006) and “Zorra Total” (2011), told the CNN that the move to space was not traumatic, having accepted that “this is now life.”

Rezende said that he has thought of leaving the place but this recalls him that he no longer has the vigor to work as before and keeping himself – this would be a desire for “ex Rui”.

According to him, on an ordinary day at the artists’ retreat he wakes up, has breakfast at home – even having the option to feed on the cafeteria with other residents – see television, writes pages of his books and makes his dinner – thinking of leaving food to other artists in the place.

Professor Astromar’s interpreter Junqueira stressed the importance of the place that ensures that the elderly have a “worthy end” with all the necessary protection for old age, such as medical and dental care and the other aid that the place offers.

The artists’ retreat is currently shelter for famous people such as actress and ex-Schedule Iris Bruzzi, 90, (“Belíssima”), singer Flora Purim, 83, and actors Rui Resende, 87, (“Roque Santeiro”), Jaime Leibovitch, 77, (“soul mate”) and Silvio Pozzato, 67, 67 (Pantanal ”).
