Roraima police officers cross the border and are detained by the Venezuelan army

Military policemen from the state of Roraima were arrested after crossing the border between Brazil and Venezuela this Friday (24th), in the city of Santa Elena de Uairén. Officers from the Independent Rapid and Ostensive Intervention Group (GIRO) are seen in images circulating on social media being approached by soldiers of the Venezuelan army.

In a note, the Military Police of Roraima stated that “all the necessary measures to ensure the integrity and release of the garrison that is being held in the neighboring country have been taken”. The agency also stated that the investigation of the details and motivation of the incident will only be possible after the release of the officers.

The vehicle was operating in the municipality of Pacaraima, a border town between the two countries, in Operation Horus, aimed at apprehending drugs and contraband in the region. The operation is part of the Border Guards program, of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, which monitors the irregular departure of licit and illicit products from the country through road transport.
