Rosa Weber authorizes hearing of former presidents of Petrobras and Banco do Brasil

Minister Rosa Weber, acting president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), authorized the hearings of the former president of Petrobras, Roberto Castello Branco, and the former president of Banco do Brasil, Rubem Novaes, on statements about the existence of messages that could incriminate President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

“I therefore grant the request for preliminary investigations made by the Federal Public Ministry, in the manner set out above. For this purpose, the present case should be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office”, he determined.

The move took place in a lawsuit filed by Senator Randolfe Rodrigues after a report by the “Metrópoles” portal stated that the former president of state-owned Roberto Castello Branco declared in a private group that his old functional cell phone had evidence that could incriminate the president.

In early July, the PGR asked to hear the former managers. For the PGR, Castello Branco must be asked to clarify which messages and audios from the corporate cell phone he had and which, specifying their content, could “incriminate” the President of the Republic, in addition to the dates, circumstances and contexts they were forwarded or received, in addition to to explain why he did not present them to the competent authorities at the first possible opportunity.

As for the former president of Banco do Brasil, the PGR stated that it will be an opportunity to clarify, among other pertinent questions, the history of contact with the former president of the state-owned company, the nature of the conversation, whether he knows himself and is able to detail the messages and the alleged facts and types of crime to which Roberto Castello Branco allegedly reported.

According to the PGR, the elements presented so far do not contain sufficient ministerial conviction to initiate the requested investigation.

At the beginning of July, Rubem Novaes told analyst Renata Agostini that, regarding the exchange of messages, it is up to Castello Branco to clarify. And he says that there was no interference from President Jair Bolsonaro in his administration. The report was unable to contact Castello Branco or his supporters.

Rosa Weber decided on the MP’s request due to the recess, and she responds for the STF as acting president until this Friday (15). The rapporteur of the process is Minister Luís Roberto Barroso.
